This Week At IAA Friday 12 June 2020
As the lockdown continues to ease in various parts of the world and we are hopefully returning to some semblance of normality, we continue to work for a better world for nonbelievers. We want to take a moment to recognize the many changes that have come from the unrest in the United States of America. While much still needs to change, it seems minds are opening and a sort of awakening is taking place. We continue to stand with the protestors as the changes keep coming, as it all goes to prove that activism work. We are proud to support the activists in the streets across the United States, and we are proud to count ourselves as activists, too.
Message From The President
Dear supporter: I hope you are all well and staying safe. Our Secular Underground Network program has now been up and running for a month and we are receiving requests for help weekly. We’ve got a great team working on the cases. Our fundraiser this month is for Free Hearts, Free Minds which also helps non-believers in difficult situations.
As you are all aware, our campaign to free Mubarak Bala from his illegal detention by the Nigerian police continues.
Sadly we must announce that we are no closer to scaling the walls. He is still being held, his lawyers have still been unable to meet with him and he is still awaiting his arraignment.
We also believe, but cannot prove that he may have been moved to another secret location, whilst the wheels of Nigerian "justice" slowly turn.
Free Hearts, Free Minds Fundraiser
Free Hearts, Free Minds is Yasmine Mohammed's organization that provides professional services for ex-Muslims who still live in Islamic countries. The fundraiser we launched continues to astound us. Due to your generosity, it currently stands at $2505.
We honestly cannot thank you enough for your support of this worthy cause. If you haven't contributed, but still wish to donate, feel free to follow the link below.
Our initiative to create and build the International Atheists Chamber of Commerce (IACOC) continues apace. We are now in a position to create tools to help atheist business owners around the world connect with each other and hopefully build lasting relationships, and creating a network of like-minded people.
Secular Underground Network
The team is already very busy helping atheists in need around the world. Secular Underground Network only launched a week ago and we are already looking into 10 cases. We are happy to be given the opportunity to help but sad that this is such a pervasive problem that our case numbers grow so quickly. Whilst we can't go into detail for obvious reasons, we are proud to be a force for good.
If you want to support the Secular Underground Network, please consider becoming a member.
Guidestar Bronze Seal of Transparency
After only two months of being in operation, IAA has already received the Bronze Seal of Transparency from Guidestar. This is really important to us. We want to be completely transparent at IAA and are convinced we will achieve Gold status. Be sure to check the Guidestar rating of any charitable organization you donate to.
Welcome New Partners
We are pleased to announce that we have gained six new partnerships in the last week. A warm welcome goes out to Black Nonbelievers, Humanist Association of Ghana, Association of Atheism, Turkey, MANS India, MANS UK and Atheist Iran. We are making our way through calls with all of our partners to figure out ways that we can team up and help them reach their goals. We are so excited to have you all on board.
If you would like to add your group to our growing list of partners, please apply here.
There are now several vacancies for an apprenticeship with IAA.
You could acquire many work skills that will be of benefit in a variety of workplaces and learn administrative, marketing, budgeting and organizational skills that will help you all your working life. You might earn some experience in management and team building. You'll also get to learn about the unique challenges that nonprofit organizations face.
There is also a small stipend as our thanks to you, and you'll be able to walk away with a letter of reference and a group of friends who can vouch for you in any professional setting.
While it can be hectic, stressful and even heartbreaking sometimes, the good far outweighs the bad, and working with a non-profit organization can only look good on your resume.
Click here if these opportunities interest you.
The need for volunteers never slows. Whether you can only spare an hour a month or want to help out full-time, we can use your skills!
This week we want to give a shout out to Andrew Hobson, our Communications Director. Andrew is a dedicated and selfless man who is always ready to help us in any way he can. He's a jack of all trades and we are so lucky to have him on board. Of course, it helps that he has a great sense of humour and always makes us laugh. Thank you, Andy! You are our unicorn!
Once again, we cannot thank you enough for the support that you have given us and hopefully continue to give us as we continue to grow and get our message of tolerance and inclusivity out there.
