We Can't Believe How Much You Have Helped Us Accomplish
While we have lived through it, it's still very hard for our staff and board to wrap their minds around just how much we have been able to accomplish in such a short period of time.
Bridget Gaudette and Courtney Heard began raising funds to start International Association of Atheists just four months ago, on February 21st of 2020. In that time, much has happened and none of it would have been possible without you.
For starters, we have raised a total of $22,246 USD at the time of this writing. $8118 of that was sent to Humanist International (less GoFundMe and transfer fees) to pay for the legal defence of Mubarak Bala. See the screenshot of the transfer included in this meme:
$3045 of the money we raised went to our partner, Free Hearts, Free Minds. The transfer of these funds is still pending, but we will post an update to our social media when it is complete. Free Hearts, Free Minds offers essential mental health services to apostates in Muslim-majority countries, deterring depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. We are so proud that our supporters saw this as a worthy cause to donate to.
$2007 has been so raised, so far, for our partner, Humanist Global Charity. HGC helps to run orphanages in DR Congo. The children in these orphanages have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, Ebola and conflicts in the region. They are housed, loved, fed, clothed and educated with an evidence-based curriculum. This costs money and so we are trying to raise enough to send all the kids to school for one year.
That means that in total, we have raised $13,170 for our partners. Partners are humanist, atheist and atheist-friendly organizations around the world who we support. Each month, we choose a project to highlight and many of those projects will be initiatives from our partners. Becoming a partner is free.
We have also used the money we have raised for:
Our web site development and various online marketing tools
The incorporation process
Membership packs including pins, bumper stickers, tote bags, membership cards and mailing
Business cards and other print marketing materials
Communications - phone, email, PO Box
Maintaining a minimum balance in our bank account
Last month, we received a shoutout from Penn Jillette:
In May, entertainer, Morgue, gave his stimulus check to our fundraiser for Mubarak Bala's legal aid fund.
Our work has caught the eye of some big names. If you want to be part of this, you can sign up to be a member and grab yourself some cool IAA swag. Members can get membership cards, bumper stickers, pins and more.
It's important to note that it has not all been forward progress since we started this venture. There have indeed been setbacks as well. In 2020, we faced the loss of our advisory board member, Mubarak Bala, who is currently in prison in Nigeria, or so we are led to believe. So, while we list the fundraiser for his legal team as a highlight, this was and continues to be a very difficult experience. We are working for and thinking of his loved ones.
Read more about his case here.
We thank you for your continued support of International Association of Atheists. None of this would be possible without you.
